Very rare complete copy of the first 8vo ed. (1st ed., 1787-1790, 1820, folio), of this "impressive work, praised by Burckhardt as "the only perfect source of information regarding the laws and constitution of the Turkish Empire"" (Atabey). Mouradja d'Ohsson (1740-1807), writer of Armenian origin, was diplomat in the service of the King of Sweden in Constantinople, his native city. He went to Paris to publish his work, but the Revolution interrupted the publication and he came back to Constantinople. He returned to France in 1799, but died in 1807 before he could complete his work, which was continued and published in 1820 by his son Constantine. Our copy includes the 8vo-ed. of Constantine's supplement (vol. V-VII, 1824). The 8vo-ed. has only a limited number of figures, variable from one copy to another. This one includes the engr. title by J.-B. Simonet after Moreau (vol. I), 2 pl. and 1 fold. table. Bound by Tenhaeff, in Berlin (yellow printed label).
