Folio: [8]-1/88-151/370-375/398 pp.; 10 pl. (two jumps in the pagination but text complete; foxing, upper margin of p. 3 and upper corner of p. 225 restored, upper margins of pp. 45 and 105 [i.e. 155] missing, pp. 241-250 detached, margin of pl. p. 60 repaired, geneal. table torn to fold).
Mod. three-quarter leather, mottled paper on covers, flat spine (sl. rubbed). A rather poor copy.
First edition in English from the Latin ed. "Historia Aethiopica" (Frankfurt, 1681). Illustrated with 9 engr. plates (7 fold.), one showing the Ethiopic alphabet, and with an engr. genealogical table on double page. The German orientalist Ludolf (1624-1704) learnt the Ethiopian language of Amhara from his friend, the monk Abba Gorgoryos.
