Half-leather, marbled paper on covers ruled with a double-gilt fillet, gilt orn. spine with raised bands (worn, upper cover loose).

Extr. rare luxurious edition of drawings by Da Vinci edited by the keeper of George III's drawings, coins and medals, Chamberlaine (1745-1812). Ill. with 17 very fine engr. on 15 pl. (incl. front.). Only plates VII-XVII carry numbers; pl. [1-6] include the front. (portrait of Da Vinci). Plates X, XI are printed on one sheet, as are pl. XV, XVI (in the order XVI, XV). The publication-date of 1796 is printed on the title page; but the plates appeared serially and all carry their several dates of publication from Sept. 1795 to Oct. 1806. The first group of six plates (unnumbered) are all signed as engr. by F. Bartolozzi. Plate XII is signed as engraved by P.W. Tomkins. The final group of plates is signed as engr. by F. Bartolozzi, Shepster, P.W. Tomkins or B. Pastorini - but plate X does not carry an engraver's name.
