Large folio: 44 pp.- 4 ff.; 30+2 pl. ("Statistique de l'Europe d'après Hassel" sl. dampstained and bound first, glue residues on verso of 10 maps where photos were pasted, 2 versos water coloured, maps E24 and E27: double).

Contemp. half calf, brown mottled paper cover, gilt decorated spine (used).

3rd edition of the first part of Europe of Philippe Vandermaelen's monumental atlas and the first atlas produced by the then new printing process of lithography. The volume contains the "Statistique de l'Europe d'après Hassel" in 2nd ed. with table, errata and "Statistique de la Turquie", the "Tableau comparatif des principales hauteurs du globe", the "Carte d'assemblage de l'Europe" and 29 double-paged maps. It is complete as such, but has 2 additional maps of great interest: 1. "Partie de l'Espagne et Portugal" (E24) is present in 2 editions, the usual 2nd ed., signed "P", and the rare 1st ed., dated "Juillet 1825", that was criticised by G. Hassel and therefore replaced by Vandermaelen. - 2. "Grèce" (E27) also in 2 ed., 1st dated "Juillet 1825". The atlas was published in instalments between 1825 and 1827. Both maps added come from the 2nd instalment, Vandermaelen reworked the plates and removed the date and signature, and added the new maps in the 10th and 11th instalments.
Ref. Silvestre V, Atlas [1 & 3] (the 1st ed. of E24 and E27).
