The
first complete edition of the Oracula sibyllina, a collection of the oracles traditionally attributed to Sibyls. The editio princeps had appeared in 1545; this bilingual edition of 1599 was edited by the physician from Heidelberg Johannes Obsopaeus (1556-1596), who largely emended the text, supplementing it with his extensive commentaries. "A very handsome edition, not only for its typographical execution with three different sizes of the Grecs du Roi, but also for the very fine engravings by Charles de Mallery of the twelve Sibyls in Panvinius' essay on the subject in the first part. The title-pages for the second and third parts have the Lutetia ship woodcut. Notable features of this work are the Latin translation by the famous Castellio (first published 1546) and Scaliger’s edition of Astrampsychus" (Smitskamp).
Ref. Cp. Smitskamp (Scaliger collection) 181 (1607 ed.). - Adams S-1061, O-208, O-209. - Hoffmann III:396. - Caillet 8135.

Huygens (name on 1st title) . - "T. Gaisford, S. T. P. Aed. Xti Decan.", the English classical scholar and clergyman Thomas Gaisford (1779-1855), dean of Christ Church, Oxford (armorial bookpl.).
