Contemp. half sheep with corners, marbled paper on covers, flat spines, red leather title label (rubbed, bumped corners, joints rubbed and sl. splitting, heads def.).
First edition of this rare travelogue by the Dutch naval officer Cornelis de Jong (1762-1838). Ill. with 4 engr. fold. pl. "Reede van de Kaap de Goede Hoop", "de Kaapstad, met omliggende bergen en reede", "de Simonsbaai" and "Wapenoefening der schieloopers op de bergen in Noorwegen", 4 engr. hand-coloured pl. of costumes of Norwegian farmers by De Jong, Vinkeles, De Wit and Veelwaard, and 3 fold. tables. De Jong sailed to Cape Town on the frigate Scipio in 1794 to escort a convoy of VOC ships to the Netherlands. He ended up in Norway, leaving the country only nine months later, after crossing it from west to east. De Jong kept notes of his journey, which he later incorporated into these letters to an imaginary friend.
