Excellent portrait of a Parisian man, drawn in a very realistic manner, characteristic for the Dutch painter Louis Chantal (1822-1899). He was born in Amsterdam and was a student of J. A. Kruseman. He spent some time in Paris between 1860 and 1865, which is the period in which the present portrait was made.
