Folio: front.-[4]-76 pp.; 49 pl. (some spotting, sl. marg. damp stains).
Contemp. three-quarter green calf, marbled paper covers ruled with blind roll-stamp, blind & gilt orn. flat spine (rubbed).
First edition of the work by the Belgian P.-J. Benoit (1782-1854) who travelled in Suriname in 1830. There, he witnessed daily life and opposed the abolition of slavery. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 49 nice lithographs "sur chine appliqué" by Madou and Lauters (fig. 99 subjects), most showing scenes of the everyday life of black slaves, but also topographic views, life of the native Indians and African-Americans, the fauna and flora, ceremonies, houses, costumes, etc.
