Contemp. threequarter brown morocco, covers in different brown, flat spine (sl. us., corners and edges bumped).
1st edition and marvellous account of a British naval expedition accompanying the Amherst Embassy to the Qing court in 1816. With early descriptions of visits to Korea that had been only sketchily explored and to the Ryukyu Archipelago, that was for the 1st time described in detail. Incl. 8 nicely hand-coloured aquatints by William Havell, protégé of Turner, of which the front. with a dramatic view of the Japanese Volcano Island Iwo Jima (or: Sulfur island), 5 maps (2 folding) and 2 pl. which are illustrations of local articles of everyday use and of a dip sector.
