Editio princeps of the 2nd-c. Macedonian author Polyaenus. The "Stratagems in war" is divided into 8 books: the first 6 contain accounts of the stratagems of the most celebrated Greek generals, the 7th contains stratagems of non Greeks and Romans, and the 8th those of the Romans and of illustrious women. Parts, however, of the 6th and 7th books are lost, so that of the 900 stratagems which Polyaenus described, 833 have survived. Woodcut mark on title; another one at the end. Printed in 2 col. with Greek along fore-edge.
