This topic got Lafage the nickname "the new Michelangelo". Raymond Lafage (1650-1684) was the son of a stained glass artist. Initially he went to Lyon where he studied anatomy with a surgeon. He studied in Paris but did not feel at home in the capital and returned to Toulouse and left then for Italy. He was noticed for his excellent drawings, which were reproduced by printmakers such as Gerard Valck.
