Drawing, graphite, pen and black ink, with grey and blue wash, 55,5 x 35,7 cm, vellum paper, signed (ND?) at lower left (some frayed paper at right edge and lower right corner, sl. smudged).
An impressive perspectival view of a neo-gothic memorial monument. They were at the height of architectural fashion in most European city parks and squares during the hayday of Gothic revival (1850-1900). Well-known examples of such memorials are the monument for Sir Walter Scott in Edinburgh, the monument to Emperor Franz I in Prague or the monument honouring Leopold I in Laeken, Brussels. The monument in this present drawing has not been identified and may just be an architectural fantasy. Possibly German.
