An impressive canvas depicting the temporary triumphal arch constructed for the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Belgian independence. The arch was designed by the Belgian architect Auguste Félix Schoy (1838-1885), whose oeuvre is known for its neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque architectural style. For the Jubilee several similar arches were constructed throughout the city, culminating in the Parc du Cinquantenaire. The present painting is a unique document which testifies to this lost ephemeral piece of Belgian architecture.
