8vo: [14]-304 pp. (a couple of tiny holes due to paper quality, not affecting text; some light traces of red pencil colouring on some pl.; light toning).
19th-c. brown quarter shagreen, mod. light brown shagreen boards with gilt monogram at front, gilt spine with 4 raised bands (sl. rubbed), marbl. endpapers. Good copy.
Rare second Brussels edition of this work (1st Brussels & Paris 1630) by the popular French baroque writer and historian Jean Puget de La Serre (1600-1665). Engr. ill.: front. (bound before p. 1), vign. on title, nice portrait of the dedicatee Karl Eusebius, Prince of Liechtenstein and 7 full-page pl. by C. Galle, P. de Jode, P. de Mallery and G. van Schoor after N. van der Horst, a pupil of Rubens. The rather curious and finely engr. ill. intend to picture the sufferings of Christ in contrast with the pleasures of courtiers. Added full-page pl. "Mater dolorosa" by M. vanden Enden (bound before title).
