Contemp. marbled calf, gilt ruled covers with three fillets, gilt orn. spine with raised bands, marbled edges (joints splitting, partly rubbed).
Lucan's epic poem on the Roman Civil War, edited by Richard Cumberland and annotated by Hugo Grotius and Richard Cumberland. Illustrated with two large copper-engravings: on title and at the end of the "Ad lectorem". Printed to 500 copies by the Strawberry Hill Press, hand-press of Horace Walpole established at his house. The press ran from 1757 until 1789 and published a total of 32 books.
