London, Old Bourne Press, 1902

12mo.

Publ. cased binding, boards of grey paper ill. with a large composition in green incorporating the title, beige cloth spine, decorated endpapers. Unopened copy.

Summer season only of the second series (one vol. for each season) of The Elf. Edition limited to 250 copies (n. 45). Printed in black and red. Completely written and illustrated variously in black, red and blue by James Guthrie. Announcement loosely inserted at the end.
Small, refined work printed by W. Herbert Broome at the Old Bourne Press founded in the same year. Broome also designed the "Myrtle" type used here. His aim was to produce beautiful books entirely by hand, both in material and labour. Unfortunately, a fire puts an end to the activities of the press in 1904. Guthrie (1874-1952), poet, typographer and artist of this work, founded in 1899 the Pear Tree Press redeeming the press used by William Morris. The earliest of Guthrie's endeavours on the other hand were printed at the Old Bourne Press.
