Beschrijving lot

1. Rare square equerre. Brass, 13,5 x 4,8 cm. Flanders?, 17th or 18th c.
2. 4 octogonal equerres in original boxes, some with vertical hairs. Manufactured in Brussels (Tibaut; Dratz), Paris (Société des Lunetiers) and Valenciennes (Lusardi). 19th c. Brass or white metal. Various sizes. In original box. In order to make it fit the box, the handle is unscrewed and inserted through the hole in the upper end of the instrument. The visors of the equerre (literally "straight angle" in French) create sight lines of 0°, 45°, 90°, 135° and their complements. The Parisian equerre was co-manufactured in Brussels by Dratz.
3. Cylindrical equerre, the so-called Italian type, in original box. Manufactured in Paris (signed: Société des Lunetiers). 19th c. Brass, 15 x 7 cm. The Société des Lunetiers (°1849) consisted of a small network of instrument making workshops in Paris. The Italian type with slots on the top to allow oblique sight in the vertical plane was used in mountainous regions.
4. Rare spherical equerre, as represented in Balasse's "Compendium". Brass, height: 16,5 cm.
5. Pantometer or "Precision Equerre". Brass, 15 x 6,8 cm. 19th c. As a successor of the equerre which could only measure angles that were multiples of 45 degrees, the pantometer can measure any angle.
