Drawing, pen and black ink over black chalk, with light brown and grey wash, framing line in brown ink, 24,5 x 29 cm, laid paper, unsigned (laid down on cardb. mount, several large repaired tears along upper and lower edge).
Under passe-partout.
Christ carried to his tomb by two men after the Crucifixion. A young man to the left holding a torch, as an indication that it is a night scene. A fourth man is seen on the ground at the right. The loose drawing style with diagonal parallel hatching and technique point towards a 17th-century hand, possibly Rome. Traces of black chalk show clear pentimenti during the drawing process.
Prov. William Bates (1824-1884, coll. stamp, Lugt 2604).
