First bars from the first scene from the first act of the opera "Dantons Tod" (Danton's Death): "Sies die hübsche Dame, wie artig Sie die Karten dreht". Originally composed in 1835 by the German dramatist and writer of poetry and prose Georg Büchner (1813-1837), considered part of the Young Germany movement. The opera was later adapted by the Austrian composer Gottfried von Einem (1918-1996), and first performed in 1947 in Salzburg during the Salzburg Festival.
