English: "Letters and sketches", Philadelphia, 1843) of relations and letters of the Jesuit missionary, explorer and pioneer Pieter-Jan De Smet (Dendermonde 1801-1873 Saint Louis), called by the Indians "Grote Zwartrok". Ill. with lithogr. front. portrait of the author (ms. signed by De Smet?) and 19 full-page lithogr. pl. showing St Louis, landscapes, Indian villages and indigenous people, religious scenes, plants, a buffalo hunt (folding map mentioned by Sabin missing). "It contains material and illustrations not in the American edition, including some specimens of the Indian language" (Sabin).
