Description du lot

French manuscript on vellum, 4to (ca. 29,5 x 21,5 cm): [2]-37 ff. (old pen foliation), written in brown and red ink with blue and red pen-flourished initials (ff. xiii, xxxviii and last quire missing, first ff. marg. waterstained and soiled, right corner of first quire dog-eared, sl. soiling and spotting, some ff. browned, occ. contemp. ms. annot.).

Contemp. limp vellum, lower cover overl., flat spine (soiling, water stain on front cover, tiny holes and tears).

Never-before described copy of a small treatise on various aspects of the legal procedures applicable to the Parliament of Paris by the brothers Guillaume and Pierre de Maucreux around 1330. This work served as source of the well-known "Grand Coutumier de France" by Jacques d'Ableiges (ca. 1350-1402) and was never printed. The original is lost and the only copy known is held by the BnF (ms.fr.19832), copied on 10 May 1473 for Giovanni Fagotelle, butler to Count Cola di Campobasso. Comparison between the critical ed. of the Parisian copy (by Pillet in 2006) and ours shows that they come from 2 different families with linguistic and textual variants (in particular to the names of the persons mentioned in the examples of legal proceedings). The first f. is ill. with a large red and blue pen-flourished initial. The lower cover bears a Dutch title inscribed by a 15th-c. hand which testifies that this book circulated in the Low Countries, certainly in the hands of a jurist or a lawyer.
