Contemp. quarter calf, paper on boards, gilt spines with 5 raised bands, leather labels (corners bumped, joints, bands and heads & tails rubbed). Good copy.
First edition of this translation, first published in 1775-1778 under the title "Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe". Ill. with 2 engr. title vign., 8 full-page engr. and 15 engr. in text. Lavater (1741-1801) is one of the last descriptive physiognomists. His findings in this influential work were supported by i.a. the English physician and author Thomas Browne. Publ. catalogue in fine of vol. 2. Enriched with a hand-coloured drawing of two engr. portraits printed in the book: Frans and Jacob Naerebout. The drawing is signed Cornelis De Jonker (Gorinchem 1761-1830?).
