First edition of the Bible with the massive commentary or postilla by Hugo de Sancto Caro. The French Dominican (ca. 1200-1263) was the central figure in the intense campaign of biblical studies carried out by the Dominicans of Paris in the 13th c. He was lecturer in theology at the convent of Saint-Jacques in Paris and climbed the hierarchy becoming Provincial of France and afterwards Cardinal Priest by Innocent IV in 1244. His massive commentary was late in reaching print and slightly overtaken in popularity by the equally impressive commentary of the Franciscan Nicholas of Lyra in the 14th c. The complete edition was produced over five years (1498-1502), which was a giant enterprise, but enjoyed a long life being reprinted as late as the early 18th c. Vulgate text in 2 col. surrounded by Hugo's commentary in 2 col. Initial spaces with printed guide letters of which some rubricated. Colophon only at the end of the final volume.
