4to: [48]-ccclvii-[1-2 bl.] pp. (foxing, some marg. staining, sm. piece of paper lacking to blank margins of pp. 129-130).

19th-c. red morocco by Belz-Niédrée, spine titled in gilt with raised bands, gilt ruled edges and inside covers, gilt & marbled edges matching endpapers (scratches, joints renewed, corners rubbed). Wide-margined copy.

Second edition (1st: 1555) of this beautiful emblem book by the Italian humanist writer Bocchi (1488-1562). Illustrated with 151 full-page engr. rectangular emblems by Giulio Bonasone and retouched by the young Agostino Carracci. The illustrations show the whole universal knowledge: physics, metaphysics, theology, dialectic, love, life and death, etc. Large woodcut device of the Society on title. One ornamental initial.
