Description du lot

8vo: viii-272 pp. (some spotting and browning).

Half leather binding (spine repaired).

First French edition translated by A.C. Danyau of "Das schräg verengte Becken nebst einem Anhange über die wichtigsten Fehler des weiblichen Beckens überhaupt" (1839) by the German obstetrician Naegele (1778-1851). Ill. with 16 fold. pl. lithographed by P. Dupont. "First description of the obliquely contracted pelvis, or "Naegele pelvis". Because of its rarity and the difficulty of recognizing it clinically in living subjects, the obliquely contracted pelvis, with its most often fatal consequences at delivery, was unknown until Naegele's study of 37 cases" (Garrison & Morton).
Ref. BnF. - Garrison & Morton 6257. - COPAC. - Wellcome IV:210.
Joined: 1. Le Boursier du Coudray, Angélique Marguerite - Abrégé de l'art des accouchements [...]. Paris, Debure, 1777. 8vo: xvi-208 pp. (spotting and some dampstaining, tears in last 3 lvs reinforced with tape). Contemp. calf, central gilt arms on covers (corners and sides very much damaged), gilt orn. flat spine (head and tail def., spine vertically cracked in the middle). Later edition (first 1759, first ill. ed. 1769) by the influential and pioneering midwife Le Boursier du Coudray (1712-1794). Ill. with a portrait front. and 26 engr. pl. in colour by J. Robert after P. Chapparre. Robert was a pupil of Jacob Christophe Le Blon, inventor of the three- and four-colour printing system. The edition in 1769 was the first work on obstetrics to appear with plates printed in multiple colours. Le Boursier du Coudray was born into an eminent French medical family and rose from middle-class origins to become noticed and commissioned by Louis XV himself. She invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin for practising mock births, called "The Machine" and published this midwifery textbook. She used her knowledge to teach midwifery to peasant women in an attempt to reduce infant mortality. Ref. Wellcome II:492. - Blake 260. - COPAC. Prov. Louis XV (arms on covers). - 2. Farabeuf, L.-H. Ref. Not in BnF, COPAC. - 3. Miquel, A. - Traité des convulsions chez les femmes enceintes en travail et en couche [...].
