Description du lot

Folio: [12]-695-[18] pp. (a few single wormholes towards the end, dampstain in upper margin towards the gutter on several quires).

Contemp. blindruled pigskin over wooden boards, spine with 5 raised bands (def. at head and tail), one clasp and two catches pres. Kept in a mod. slipcase.

First edition of Janus Cornarius's classic Latin translation of the collected works of Hippocrates. In 1538, Cornarius (ca. 1500-1558), who was a Saxon humanist and friend of Erasmus, had edited Froben and Episcopius's Greek edition of Hippocrates' works, which long remained the standard text. His translation for the present Latin edition also sets the standard that was followed by all others: Erasmus called it a work of "genius". With printer's mark on title and at the end.
