Bourgeois (1563-1636) was a French midwife, called "The Scholar" by her contemporaries. She was a student of Ambroise Paré and later on midwife to King Henry IV of France. The first part was the first book on obstetrics publ. by a midwife, used as a vade mecum until the 18th c. Title in red & black. Woodcut on title.
