Contemp. three-quarter brown leather, purple buckram covers, gilt orn. flat spine, gilt top edge (partly rubbed, leather of spine partly detached, sm. lack to tail).

1st French trsl. publ. in London in the same year as the original English ed. It was sought after because of the nice plates of Ottoman architecture and images of daily life, made after W. H. Bartlett (1809-1854). Some plates with English, French and German titles. Illustrated with a front. portrait of author, the original English engr. title and 79 steel engraved views.
