Description du lot

5,6 x 11,5 cm, unsigned.

Tied on a small green and red cushion with hanger.

Two nice Dutch pearl bas-reliefs with amusing scenes. One represents a merry company of two men smoking pipes in a vineyard, while being served beer or wine by a woman. A dog mimict the pipe-smoking. The second scene is of woman leaving the bed after being bitten by fleas. An added Dutch text reads: "De vlooye steeke fel daar door kan ik niet slaapen/ had ik een fris gesel bij mijn om vreught te raapen/ Dan waar mijn hert geruust. k' sou om geen vlooye denke / Maar hem daar minne lust mijn maagde roosie schenke". They were intended as covers for a tobacco or snuff box. Comparable examples can be seen in the Amsterdam Pipe Museum (inv: APM 21.351) and the Rotterdam City Museum (inv: 474).
