Cont. half calf, gilt spine on 5 raised bands, gilt black title label (rubbed, corners bumped, sm. def. at tail). Beautiful copy.
2nd French edition (1st 1768) of 2 works on fruit trees for the kitchen garden by J.H. Knoop (1700-1769), curator of the gardens of Princess Maria Louisa in Leeuwarden. The works, among the most beautiful Dutch 18th-c. books, are rightly famous for their engraved and splendid handcoloured plates and for their presentation of many species now lost. The first one with 20 full-page pl. by Folkema and Philips depicting 103 varieties of apples and 82 varieties of pears, the second one with 19 full-page pl. with ill. of peaches, plums, cherries, berries, etc. Ref.
