2 parts in 1 vol., folio: [10 incl. engr. title]-728-[18], [2]-120-[4] pp.; 43 pl. (tear in fold of Africa map restored with minimal loss, some marg. tears, sometimes with sm. loss or restored (some loss of text p. 713), some annot. in pencil, some sm. spots).
Contemp. mottled calf, boards decorated with gilt frame within double gilt-fillet, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red speckled edges (joints starting to split, spine sl. rubbed). Large paper copy.
First edition of Dapper's description of Africa's mainland (1st part) and the African isles, Madagascar, Cape Verde, Canary Islands, etc. (2nd part). It is one of the most authoritative 17th-c. accounts on Africa, although the author, the Dutch physician and writer O. Dapper (1636-1689), never visited the area. Richly illustrated with 43 pl.: large folding continental map, smaller maps and plates depicting local fashion, flora, fauna and cities and numerous large in-text ill.
