Description du lot
Folio: [10 incl. title & portr.]-1286-[37] pp. (missing all the original portraits but for the author's portrait which is remounted, last f. with list of pl. and printer's mark missing, all the enriched remounted plates are cut short to the outer margin, wormholes at the end).
19th-c. polished blindst. brown calf in a 16th-c. style with brass nods, clasps and catches, red edges (some min. def., joints, head and tail rubbed).
First edition of this historical chronicle from the death of Charlemagne until 1620 by A. van Meerbeeck, teacher in Bornem and Aalst (1563-post 1627). Engr. ill.: hand-coloured allegorical title by Willem de Haen after Petrus de Jode and hand-coloured author's portrait. Enriched with 62 full-page portraits signed P. de Jode of Emperor Charles, Philip II, Margaret of Austria, Alexander Farnese, Albert and Isabella, etc. following the story of the "Chroniicke". These plates, obviously not in the list of plates (which is missing in our copy), show mainly the same rulers and celebrities that are to be found in a normal copy. All the portraits are remounted on ornamental hand-coloured borders by Bouttats hiding the original portraits of these plates. Printed in 2 col. in Gothic type.
