Burgundy shagreen, flat spine, marbl. endpapers (sl. rubbed). Good copy.
Very rare first English edition of the posthumously publ. and very influential "Méthode pour apprendre à dessiner les passions" (1698) by the French baroque painter Le Brun (1619-1690). In the 1670s, the illustrations accompanied his famous lectures on the effect of the passions on human expression, brought before "l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture". Ill. with title and 19 full-page pls by J. Tinney (fl. 1729-1761), showing and naming each expression, with a description underneath. Ref. ESTC N493022. - COPAC (2). - Not in BL.
