Description du lot
Engr., 30,7 x 47,3 cm, hand-coloured (sl. age-toned, light traces of central fold).
Mounted on cloth. Loose under passe-partout.
Nicely hand-coloured copy of Visscher's world map of 1657 which was used in the Ravesteyn Bible. The presentation of California as a peninsula is more correct than most theories at the time. Australia and Van Diemen's Land are marked, but not the north coast of Australia discovered in 1644. 2 celestial spheres on the right-hand hemisphere and an annotation on the discovery of America on the left-hand sphere. The allegorical figures in the corners represent the 4 continents with examples of animal life and the inhabitants.
