Folio, 3 parts in 1 vol.: 248-[8], [8]-102-[2 bl.], 38-[10] pp.; 1 pl. (foxing, occ. marginal stains, hole and tear in p. 63 of 2nd part, 2 pp. of the Table of contents partly detached).
18th-c. half vellum, paper covers, flat spine with leather labels (foxing and covers rubbed).
Second Italian translation by Gabriello Simeoni of an interesting treatise on Roman religion and military tactics, based on numismatic evidence, as well as descriptions of Roman baths and Greek and Roman gymnastics. Contains numerous full-page woodcut ills by Pierre Vase, depicting costumes, arms and armour, military machines, baths and musical instruments, and many coins. Also with a fold. plate figuring a Roman military camp (margin strengthened). Two titles within identical engr. border, ornamented and historiated headpieces and initials. Baudrier presents this edition as the first but an edition had already been published by Rouillé in 1558. The "Discorso della castrametation" was published separately for the first time in 1555. Ref.
