Description du lot

4to: [58] ff. (top corner gnawed at with loss of some letters, title leaf cut into pieces with loss of part of the ill. and of the top corner, tears in A2, A4, B1, top border of I1-2 and N1-2 cut off with some loss of text or illustration).

Contemp. limp vellum wallet binding with flap (soiled, front top corner def).

Extremely rare copy (a unique variant?) of a very popular text on ancient history and "science" (astronomy and the like). The Imperial privilege at the end is dated 12 January 1583 (Brussels). The woodcut mark at the end has the date "1585"; the woodcut on P2v is dated "1538". The original publishing firm of Van Ghelen had moved from Antwerp to Rotterdam in 1585. Large woodcut on title with one of the Zodiac on verso (def.). Some 155 large and small woodcuts, some with woodcut borders. Woodcut tailpieces (some with borders). Title printed in red and black. Printed in Gothic type. The present copy has an identical fingerprint with the one descibed by STCN, but shows variation in spelling and interpunction, e.g. at bottom of A2r ("samen/ | vramen." against "samen | vramen/" in the KB copy) and at bottom of A3r ("schijnt/ | verdwijnt" against "schynt | verdwiint" in the KB copy).
Ref. Cp. STCN 833569473 (KB copy missing title).
Prov. "Dit bnock [!] hoordt toe | Dirck Adriaen Ottens | Wonende tot leijden | [...]" (ms. entry inside front cover).
