Charles Estienne's abridged three scholarly works - on ancient clothing, containers and receptacles and boats - to amuse and instruct childhood. "First collected edition of the three children's books based by Charles Estienne on Lazare de Baïf's studies of Roman antiquities. "De re navali" contains eight woodcuts which are considered the first illustrations ever to be used expressly for children. These originally appeared in the very rare edition of 1537 but were suppressed from most later editions. The present collected edition is one of the few editions to retain these woodcuts" (Schreiber). Greek, Latin and French keywords in a single index at the end.
