Folio: 197-[12] ff. (last bl. missing; lower margin cut and restored and sm. hole repaired in title, sm. marg. damp stain in begin.).
Marbled sheep, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands, red edges (rebacked and mod. repaired, 17th-c. boards pres., sl. rubbed, flylvs renewed). Fresh inside condition.
Rare first edition of the defence of the Church and particularly of the Mass, celibacy of the clergy and fasting against the Lutherans. This is the first book published from Coline's new officina at the sign of the "Golden Sun" ("ab insigne solis aurei"). Following the same year two reprints in Cologne to P. Quentell and H. Alopecius. Clichtove (1472-1543), a native of Nieuwpoort, was a Paris theologian and i.a. librarian of the Sorbonne. Dotted initials in various sizes.
