Contemp. sheep, spine with raised bands (used binding: corners def., front cover missing leather, back cover shaved, large part of upper spine missing leather, tail def.).
First edition of one of the most finely ill. German books of the Baroque era. Illustrated with a double-page engr. title, a full-page portrait, 58 (of 59) double-page pl., 2 full-page pl. and 9 headpieces. Covers the entire warfare including the use of weapons, artillery, drill orders, position commands, tactical maneuvers, fortress construction, protection, siege and conquest. The vivid copperplates show the library and map room, fencing, vaulting, drill, field surgery, cannons, dance of death, punishments (running the gauntlet, execution), soldier's funeral, etc. Title in red & black. Printed in Gothic in 2 col.
