Edited by the scholar Filippo Argelati (1685-1755). The humanist from Modena Castelvetro (1505-1571) was an important figure in the development of neo-classicism in drama and a member of the Accademia degli Intronati in Siena. He was famous for his commentary of Aristotle's Poetics. Condemned as heretic by the Inquisition, i.a. because of a translation of Melanchton, and excommunicated, he escaped to Chiavenna. Illustrated with his fold. portrait and a copper-engr. in-text. Biography of Castelvetro by the priest and historian Muratori (1672-1750), librarian at the Ambrosian Library in Milan and at Modena's Ducal library.
