In the first book, the Venitian historian and statesman Paruta (1540-1598) studies the causes of the greatness and decline of Rome and in the second, he examines various European governements, in particular the Venitian, to prove its superiority. The influence of Machiavelli is notable in this work. The last "discorso" deals with the defence of Vienne by Charles V against Suleiman the Magnificent. The second part of the volume contains the "Soliloquio", author's reflexions on his life and career. Woodcut medallion with portrait of Paruta on title, printer's mark at end of each parts.
