Militarian map for the development of the west bank of the Scheldt and the fortifications of Antwerp.

Engr. map, 31,5 x 65 cm pasted on a large drawing with written ms. addition signed "Schubert", 53,2 x 73,5 cm, all together 61,7 x 73,5 cm, partly heightened (folds sl. soiled, some very light stains).

Large assembly containing the "Plan de la ville et citadelle d'Anvers [...]" (Antwerp, Jouan Libraire, [19th c.]) extended by a detailed manuscript plan for the development of the west bank of the Scheldt. With German militarian annotations: "noch nicht fertiger Theil", "Platz voo [sic] die neue Stadt hat erbeuedt werden sollen" next to the "Tête de Flanders", "Deser Theil geht auch zu innondiren", etc. The map is signed by [Fyodor Fiodorovich] Schubert (1789-1865), military cartographer. Under the command of Mikhail Vorontsov (1782-1856), who was head of the Russian corps of the (Allied) occupation in France from 1815 (Second Treaty of Paris) to 1818 (Congress of Aix-la-Chapelle), Schubert led military topographical surveys of the area between the Scheldt and the Meuse. Having an unique opportunity due to this exceptional occupation, the Allied forces were able to conduct surveys in France for both military and economical purposes. Schubert’s works are considered an important milestone in the development of Russian military cartography.
