Description du lot
Folio: [6]-22-[116] pp., French, brown ink and pencil, num. diagrams drawn and/or printed on pieces of paper pasted in the notebook (light browning, water stains, some glue traces and occ. tears without loss, ± frayed edges).
Sewn, orig. blue paper cover with printed label (us., water stains and soiling, partly torn spine, partly disbound).
Curious draft of an essay by an anonymous chess and maths enthusiast, ill. with an amazing number of highly complex pen and pencil diagrams to solve the famous and very old Knight's tour problem, drawn from various methods, in particular that of Edmond Slyvons (pseud. of E. Solvyns), and also of Euler, E. Leqesne, A. Crétaine, A. Alexandre, etc. Enriched with some complementary mss diagrams on flyleaves. The author of this "draft" is possibly Edmond Solvyns (Antwerp 1793-1866 Brussels), little-known publicist and mathematician who published under the pseud. Slyvons "Application de l'analyse aux sauts du cavalier du jeu d'échecs [...]" (Brussels, 1856), extensively quoted in our manuscript.
