2 vol., 4to: [6]-xxxi [= 41]-[9]-xxxiii/xxxvi [= 43/46]-365-[1], [8]-224-144-[32] pp.; 40 pl. (vol. 1: marg. damp stain on ff. quires 2* and 4*, sm. tear of in folds of 2 maps, vol. 2: 1 pl. loosening, some ms. notes on flyleaves in both vol., very few spots).
Contemp. half calf, mottled paper boards, gilt-titled spines with raised bands (front joint of vol. 1 part. split, heads damaged, boards and spines rubbed).
Dutch translation, by P. Boddaert, of the second expanded ed. of the travels of Shaw. Ill. with 16 maps (10 fold.), a large fold. view of Algiers, a large pl. of the Temple of Fortuna Primigenia, 22 pl. (botany, Egyptian antiquities, …) and numerous in-text ill., headpieces, initials and 2 large title-vignettes. Shaw (1694-1751) was appointed chaplain to the factory at Algiers where he lived for 12 years. Fluent in Arabic and Hebrew, besides Latin and Greek, he travelled widely and adventurously in the Middle East and related his observations on geography, natural history (with the help of the botanist Johann Jakob Dillenius), customs and antiquities.
