Description du lot
Lge 4to: [2]-xvi-213-[3 bl.] pp. (some marg. spotting).
Contemp. vellum, flat spine with gilt morocco label, red edges (joints splitting). Very good large paper copy.
Very rare work by the Pavia poet Carlo Alessandro Guidi (1650-1712), chief founder of the well-known Roman Academy of the Arcadians. A luxuriously illustrated anthology of extracts from papal sermons delivered between 1703-09, in Latin prose and facing Italian verse: an unusual example of Baroque ecclesiastical culture from the pontificate of Clement XI. On the basis of extreme rarity and contents, the volume numbers among those commemorative and honorific volumes which were never sold in the trade, but offered as a ceremonial gift to cardinals, ambassadors, and other important personages. Engr. front. portrait of Clemens XI, engr. title ill., 6 full-page pl., initials and tailpieces. Each sermon is preceded by a full-page engr. on the subject of the sermon (the Holy Family adoring the Christ Child for Christmas, the Resurrection for Easter, etc.) designed by Pietro Leone Ghezzi.
Prov. Later presentation inscription. - Caietanus Quercus (mod. bookpl.). - Louis de Ridder (id.).
