Later edition (1st Amst. 1753, 2 vol.) of this work by the historian and philosopher Raynal (1713-1796). It deals only with the 16th century, more precisely the reign of Charles V and his contemporaries (Henry VIII, etc.). A "Tome second" was never published, but a "Supplément" (not present here) was published by Arkstee & Merkus (Amst.). Nice engr. allegorical frontisp. in each vol. Titles in red and black. Ref. Cp.
