Contemp. marbled calf, gilt spines with raised bands, marbled edges (rubbed, joints splitting, some heads & tails def.).
First edition of this collection of biographies of some 550 Dutch and Flemish artists from 1466 to 1659 intended to be a sequel to the "Schilder-Boek" of Van Mander. Complete with 49 fine full-page pl. engraved by Jacob Houbraken, Arnold's son (1698-1780) and some by Dirk Jonkman: front., engr. dedication (2nd vol.), author's portrait and 46 pl., mostly portraits of artists; and 7 small engr. (2 title-vign., coat of arms of the dedicatee J. van Schuilenburch and 4 ill. in-text). Enriched with 1 extra full-page portrait showing Barent Graat in vol. II, engr. by M. Poot.
