Description du lot
“A collection of Emblems by Visscher” (front flyleaf), consisting of a manuscript title (within double ruled border) and 67 ff. (pencil foliation) with 23 pp. with Dutch verses in manuscript and 45 engravings, c. 11 x 5,8 cm, with 2 scenes each = 90 illustrations, c. 4,3 x 5,8 cm with italic Dutch text.
Cont. quarter vellum (rubbed, corners bumped), flat spine titled in ink. In good condition (paper toned).
The engravings were made by a member of the Amsterdam Visscher dynasty of engravers and cartographers. Could the texts be the work of Mattheus Brouërius van Nidek (1677-1742)? “Bydichten op Hollandsche spreekwoorden en 96 Zinnebeeldige Konstprinten, in 4. M.S.” is listed among his writings in "Kabinet der Nederlandsche en Kleefsche Outheden" (1727). Prov. "S. van de Weyer", i.e. the Belgian politician and prime minister (1845-1846) Sylvain van de Weyer (1802-1874), longtime ambassador to the United Kingdom and, for the period 1849-1874, 72d member of the famous Roxburghe Club of bibliophiles (pencil note).
