Contemp. calf, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands (corners rubbed and bumped, scratches on covers, joints rubbed, def. to head and tail).
First Dutch and best edition of the most important account of the Cape of Good Hope with twice more plates than the 1st German ed. by the ethnologist, traveller, and explorer of South Africa P. Kolbe (1675-1726). Ill. with an engr. title by J.C. Philips, an engr. portrait by J. Houbraken, 6 fold. engr. maps, 1 fold. engr. plan and 45 engr. pl. showing mammals, birds, fish, and other marine animals and reptiles. Further on illustrations dealing with topography, agriculture, hunting, buildings, etc. Many of the account is based on Kolbe's own observations compared to theories of earlier writers. He informs us about the customs and habits of the Hottentots, there is also an account of the VOC government of the Cape and the earliest list of South African animals. Title in red & black. Printed in 2 col.
