Good impressions with wide margins. In 18th-c. style polished brown morocco signed L. Guétant (early 20th c.), covers with gilt-ruled borders and decorated corners, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands and gold-stamped "J. LUIKEN / BYBEL FIGUUREN / 1790", marbled endpapers (joints, head and tail sl. rubbed). Excellent condition.

Very rare edition of Jan Luyken's (1649-1712) picture Bible (1st ed.: Amsterdam, P. Mortier, 1708), undescribed in the reference works. Our copy includes a title page, introduction, table of contents and 62 etched plates (complete), all carefully hand-coloured with highlights in goldpaint. The plates still have the address of J. Covens and C. Mortier, who published an edition in Amsterdam in 1729. Impressive overview of the Old and New Testament with large compositions of iconic stories and even a map of Jerusalem.
